Asthma is a respiratory condition caused by contraction of the airways causing coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and difficulty in breathing. Asthma is linked to several genetic and environmental factors such as air pollution, allergens, etc stated Dr. Jagdananad J, Senior cardiologist, Noida International Institute of Medical Sciences.

He explained that the air pollutants affect the lungs by reducing lung function and causing oxidative stress through an accumulation of ozone resulting in an asthmatic attack. He said that the airborne particles pass through the nasal cavity and get deposited on the lung surface having a long-term effect on the lungs. He also added that asthma patients are more susceptible to these air particles and pollutants.

He suggested that when the air particles and air pollution in the area are at a higher level, it is better to avoid lung damage by following several simple practices such as using a reliever inhaler, measuring pollution, pollution forecast, avoiding the pollution hotspot, taking medicine at the scheduled time, eating healthy, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, steam therapy, using a mask, etc. (Source: https://www.hindustantimes.com/lifestyle/health/world-asthma-day-2022-how-air-pollution-is-giving-rise-to-asthma-101651290090831.html )
